Heritage Chorale Spring Concert: Basically Baroque. Join us for an evening of choral works by Vivaldi, Zelenka, and Johann Michael Haydn, accompanied by chamber orchestra, on Saturday, May 2nd,7:30 pm at Keefe Tech High School in Framingham.
Hear the Chorale sing irresistible rhythms and sumptuous harmonies that characterize the music of the great Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi. Experience in this concert two rarely-heard works by Vivaldi — his Kyrie (RV 587) for double-chorus and double-orchestra, and his dramatic setting of the Credo(RV 591).

The Magnificat in D major (ZWV 108) by Jan Dismas Zelenka shows the influence of Vivaldi and other composers of the Italian Baroque. A brilliant Czech composer, Zelenka was in residence at the royal court in Dresden at the same time that his contemporary Johann Sebastian Bach was Kapellmeister at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Bach held Zelenka in such high regard that he even had one of his sons copy out parts of Zelenka’s Magnificat in D major so that Bach could conduct it in Leipzig. Zelenka’s music, though influenced by the Italian Baroque music, is full of surprising turns of harmony and melodic twists.

The Basically Baroque program also includes works by Michael Haydn and Giovanni Battista Martini from the early Classical era. The former was the younger brother of the more famous Franz Joseph Haydn. A fine composer in his own right, Michael Haydn composed his Missa sub titulo Sancti Leopoldi (St. Leopold Mass) in 1805 for the boys’ choir in Salzburg. Replete with elegant figuration and shimmering vocal texture, Haydn’s mass is perfect for showcasing the voices of the sopranos and altos of the Heritage Chorale.

Martini was a distinguished member of the Accademia dei Filarmonici di Bologna and a teacher of such notable musicians as J. C. Bach, Jomelli, and Mozart. He was well known, however, not only as a teacher, but also as a theorist and composer. His Credo a 3 is sung by the Chorale's tenors and basses.

The Heritage Chorale, conducted by renowned Boston-area music director John Finney, is a nonprofit organization of accomplished singers dedicated to performing high quality choral music. We are committed to standards of excellence in our rehearsals and performances, and seek to inspire in ourselves and our Metrowest audience a greater love of music and community.
