Music, in whatever form we experience it, can change us in body and mind, and lead to improvements in physical health, cognitive functioning, and emotional well-being. Neuropsychologist Dr. Bonnie Wong will present insights on movement and healing within music- and dance-based therapies, accompanied by a special dance performance by flamenco therapist Yosi Karahashi.
Dr. Bonnie Wong is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with the Frontotemporal Disorders Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Drawing on 25 years of training in classical piano, her interest in the Flamenco art form, and her background in the neurosciences, she saw the potential for using music and movement as tools for cognitive training and developed a Music and Cognition training protocol. She has expanded components of this protocol to therapeutic dance programs such as Flamenco Therapy and the Tap and Clap program at Hebrew Senior Life. Her current research projects examine the effect of irregular rhythm patterns on cognitive functioning and emotional well-being, use of music and movement therapies in neurodegenerative disease, and the impact of music programs on caregivers.
Japanese-born Yosi Karahashi traveled to Spain to fulfill her dream of studying flamenco. She has performed as a member of various flamenco companies has founded Flamenco Therapy, an organization dedicated to bringing flamenco to those who need it the most: the elderly, the sick, and children who cannot access music and dance themselves. Flamenco Therapy with Yosi Karahashi works with patients in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and rehabilitation hospitals in the greater Boston area.
Artsenses, the series of lectures presented by Dr. Lisa Wong, co-Direcor of the Arts and Humanities Initiative at Harvard Medical School joins Le Laboratoire Cambridge for its 3rd year of exploration of the intersection between medicine and arts with a fascinating discussion on dance, neuropsychology and healing.
