Celebrated New England saxophonist, flutist, and composer, Greg Abate, has sculpted an impressively diverse international career. In the 70s, he played lead alto for the iconic Ray Charles Orchestra, followed by wielding the tenor sax for the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under the esteemed guidance of Dick Johnson in the 80s. His musical journey boasts 23 recordings as a leader and has seen him collaborate or share stages with jazz luminaries such as Phil Woods, Kenny Barron, Claudio Roditi, Red Rodney, Ben Riley, George Mraz, Rufus Reid, James Williams, Barry Harris, Richie Cole, Kenny Washington, Hilton Ruiz, Jerome Richardson, and Billy Hart, to name a few.
Abate’s insatiable drive keeps him on the move, touring 275 days a year. In addition to his hectic touring schedule, he shares his vast knowledge as an adjunct professor of Jazz at Rhode Island College. His association with Conn-Selmer as a representative artist has him imparting masterclasses and gracing many educational institutions as a revered guest artist.
His talent and dedication haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2016, he was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. More recently, he clinched the 2nd and 3rd spots in the 2021-22 Downbeat Readers Poll, marking his undeniable influence in the jazz arena.
Phil Woods, a fellow saxophonist and legend, aptly remarked, “I sleep a lot better knowing there are alto players like Greg Abate.”
