Join graduate student Saffron Hooper Sener for a discussion of RujéWagít^an Mi (Flying Pigeon) of the Iowa and [Artowayon] (Paddy Carr), Creek Interpreter—two portraits of Native American diplomats by Henry Inman. We will consider these artworks’ tumultuous history, forged by several competing American portraitists, as Sener talks about the role of portraiture in 19th-century international diplomacy.
This talk is part of Gray Area, a series that features members of our staff exploring artworks that capture the complexities of humanity, political landscapes, ethics, ideologies, power dynamics, and critical thinking in our times. Through this series, we hope to encourage people to observe and consider their own individual gray areas, and to think about how their unique experiences guide the choices they make.
