The new South End gallery KABINETT is pleased to present a photography exhibition of Chicago-based artist Joshi Radin. The exhibition, “A Stranger Place,” will be on view from September 23rd through November 18th. Please join us for a FREE opening reception on Saturday, September 23, from 6 to 9 pm, to enjoy refreshments and meet the artist.

In late 2008, faced with diminished work opportunities after the Great Recession, Radin accepted a sub-contract with the International Hotel Group to photograph hotels in a re-branding advertising campaign. Traveling around the country documenting hotel properties, she found herself alone in rooms normally filled with travelers, vacationers, families, business people, and hotel workers, and these spaces of public function—banquet halls, conference and meeting rooms, fitness rooms and pools— which normally dictated conventional behaviors, took on new possibilities for the artist. “I was no longer accountable to those functions; I existed outside. I responded by expressing that freedom corporeally and with constructed narrative, for no one but the camera.”

"A Stranger Place" explores elements of performance, surprise, and transgression. Working covertly in these spaces that were made available to the artist, she questioned their nature. “I responded to what each empty room posed with practices of play, conjuring, call and response. I photographed the rooms as I would for the hotel’s marketing division. They are processed for online advertising standards—somewhat retouched, somewhat beautified. They are simple fictions—sometimes lacking sprinklers, electrical sockets, perhaps stains or peeling paint. Insertion of the performing body into these spaces heightens the fiction. They become a stage.”

Recipient of New Artist Society Merit Scholarships in Photography and Visual Critical Studies departments, Radin is a current MA candidate and 2016 MFA graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her collaborative and solo works in photography, video, performance and installation have appeared at Queens Museum, the Block Museum, and galleries and venues in Chicago, Boston, Varanasi, Prague, and Hiroshima. Additionally, she is currently pursuing curatorial studies as the Dangler Curatorial Fellow at the Art Institute of Chicago. The present body of work, though dating from nearly a decade ago, has not previously been exhibited.
