About This Event
Systems programming has traditionally been a "high risk, high reward" endeavor. Languages like C and C++ are great for solving performance or memory bottlenecks, but even a small mistake can lead to crashes or -- worse -- security vulnerabilities.
Rust is a language with a new vision of systems programming. It gives you low-level control and predictability but also provides the safety and ergonomics of much higher-level languages (like Ruby or Python). The secret sauce is Rust's core notion of "ownership", which not only prevents crashes but also avoids data races, the most common (and pernicious) kind of parallel programming bug.
Why It Matters?
Learning Rust can help you write faster, more performant programs. But the concept of ownership also applies more broadly, and may help you become a better programmer overall.
What You Will Take Away
In this talk, Niko will give a high-level overview of Rust, explaining how ownership works and how it feels to use Rust in practice.
