Come celebrate the life of Rafael Guastavino, the Spanish engineer/architect whose vision and genius brought to America in the late 19th century an innovative technique of tiling that was not only fire-proof but masterpieces of beauty, from the arches in the Boston Public Library to New York's Grand Central Station to the great St. Lawrence Basilica in Asheville, North Carolina. Guastavino was not only a builder, but a violinist and composer as well, and we explore his fascinating story in From Spain to Boston: The Life of Rafael Guastavino in Words and Music. Spanish cultural lecturer Margarita Campos, violinist Wilson Pedrazas, and pianist Linda Papatopoli, offer the audience a multi-faceted event after extensive research from his earliest days in Valencia, and the United States. The lecture will be accompanied by music performances reflecting the era, and a special recording of Guastavino’s unfinished composition for a mass will be premiered.
