Summer is all about relaxation, and there’s no better way to escape from reality than by watching a good movie. But summer’s also all about spending time outdoors and taking full advantage of the balmy nights. That’s why we’ve rounded up the very best and FREE outdoor movies showing around Boston in the next few months. From Disney family favorites to spooky sci-fis, there’s a flick for everyone.

Movies series listed in chronological order based on upcoming start date.

SUNSET CINEMA AT THE MFA

Sunset Cinema is back and better than ever this year. You can stretch out on the expansive MFA front lawn and watch a host of lovely movies– no ticket required. You’ll have opportunities to purchase drinks and snacks while there. Head to Back Bay for an unforgettable experience, and don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs.

List of screenings TBA.

SUMMER IN THE CITY AT THE HARBORWALK: MOVIE NIGHT FRIDAYS

Summer in the City at The Harborwalk is the best way to spend your New England summer. In front of the Downtown’s Boston Harbor Hotel, you can watch the boats glide past, dine on outdoor patios and soak in the evening light. Each Friday, you can watch outdoor movies and watch dusk set over the Harbor.

FAMILY FLICKS AT THE PRUDENTIAL CENTER

Check out a perfect opportunity to spend an evening with your kiddos. This family-friendly movie series offers tales of princesses, ogres and trolls.

COOLIDGE AT THE GREENWAY

Coolidge Corner Theatre is a historic Boston landmark. It’s a haven for cinephiles and indie-film obsessors. It’s expanding to the beautiful Greenway this summer to show movies under the dazzling night sky.

MOVIES AT THE MANSION

Perhaps you’ve watched a movie on your couch, on your bed, in a theater, or even at a drive-through. But have you ever seen one at a mansion? This summer, you can watch films on the grounds of Waltham’s historic Lyman Estate. Take a journey back in time and catch a fun film while you’re at it.

THEATRE THURSDAYS AT REVERE BEACH

Spend a day trip at Revere Beach: the perfect spot to swim and sunbathe. But when the weather’s cooled off and night falls, make sure not to leave without watching a movie on the beach.

SUMMER SUNDAY MOVIES AT CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS PARK

At this classic North End spot, you can watch some of Hollywood’s best films right on the water. Whether you decide to laugh along with ‘Meet the Parents’ or learn something meaningful with ‘Selma,’ there’s a perfect flick for anyone.

SUMMER FLICKS AT PATRIOT PLACE

Patriot Place in Foxborough is offering a range of great films this year, from family-fun childhood tales to Marvel adventures. Bring some popcorn and a friend and get ready for an exciting evening.

BOSTON TOGETHER AGAIN MOVIE NIGHTS

Unite with your fellow Bostonians during a movie in Copley Square. Every Thursday, Boston Together Again invites you to watch some classic Hollywood flicks. Bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy the show!

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES AT THE LORING GREENOUGH HOUSE

You can watch movies on the Loring Greenough House lawn through early fall. This historic Jamaica Plain home dates back to 1760 but still stands today as a cultural and social hub for all Bostonians to enjoy. Pack a picnic and bring some friends to stretch out on the grass for some wholesome fun.

CX OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS

For fun flicks under the stars, head to Cambridge’s Maria Baldwin Open Space to enjoy free double-feature nights. There will be opportunities to purchase refreshments.

MAYOR’S MOVIE NIGHTS

Every summer, the Mayor’s Movie Nights series runs in city parks around Boston. The extravaganza starts in Jamaica Plain on 8/2 with a showing of ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines,’ and ends Downtown on 9/1 with a showing of ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.’

BOSTON LANDING OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHTS

No tickets required. Arrive early and enjoy pre-movie activities including a live DJ.

FILMS AT THE GATE FESTIVAL

Each summer, during the last weekend of August, the Asian Community Development Corporation hosts Films at the Gate, and this summer, they’re back for their 16th year. At the Chinatown Gate, you can catch a range of exciting movies, all which highlight the stories of Asian immigrants and honor the work of Asian American filmmakers.
