Are sharks smart? Dr. Kara E. Yopak, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, has explored the major evolutionary patterns in the brains of animals such as sharks, skates, and rays. Using data from more than 150 species - including great white sharks and whale sharks - Dr. Yopak will discuss how the variation in brain size and complexity reflect the animal's ecology and lifestyle characteristics. The work may pave the way for predicting and understanding intelligence, cognitive function, and more complex behavioral qualities in marine animals.
