Boston Medical Center (BMC) will hold its 22nd annual Food For Thought dinner, benefitting the Grow Clinic and its Grow Partners including the Preventive Food Pantry and the Demonstration Kitchen, at the Mandarin Oriental in Boston on Monday, Nov. 23, 2015. Proceeds from the event will help BMC meet the increasing needs of Boston’s most vulnerable families and bring attention to food insecurity issues across the country.

Created in 1984, the Grow Clinic is an outpatient pediatric subspecialty clinic at BMC that provides comprehensive medical, nutritional, developmental and social services to failure-to-thrive children from the Greater Boston area who are referred by a primary care physician. Utilizing a specialized multidisciplinary approach, the Grow Clinic aggressively targets malnutrition and failure to thrive, which may lead to lasting physical and developmental deficits, learning and emotional disorders, and difficulty fighting infection. Approximately 250 patients and their families are treated at the Grow Clinic every year, and while the number of children receiving treatment continues to increase, the average age of these vulnerable patients gets younger and younger.

BMC’s Preventive Food Pantry and Demonstration Kitchen serve as an invaluable resource for Grow Clinic families, many of whom are unable to meet their families’ nutritional needs due to socioeconomic constraints. Individuals are referred to the Food Pantry by BMC primary care providers who write “prescriptions” for supplemental – and therapeutic – foods that help promote physical health, facilitate recovery and prevent future illness. At the BMC Demonstration Kitchen, a registered dietitian and chef teaches patients how to cook healthy, low-cost meals using the foods they receive from the Food Pantry.

On average, the Preventive Food Pantry, which is 100 percent philanthropic, provides food to more than 7,000 individuals each month.
