One-time Boston premiere of award-winning Hungarian film Lesson Learned, followed by a discussion with director Bálint Szimler.
About the movie:
New teacher Juci is unexpectedly made head teacher of a 5th-grade class due to teacher shortage. Meanwhile, Palkó, recently relocated from Berlin, struggles to adapt to the demanding educational system. As Juci attempts to challenge the outdated methods, Palkó tries to fit in, a childish prank lands him in trouble, making life at school miserable for both of them. Their personal stories offer insight into an oppressive system, reflecting broader Hungarian society. “As a child returning to Hungary from America, I vividly felt the contrast between the two educational systems. Ever since, I became deeply interested in how education shapes society.” – Bálint Szimler, director

Additional information:
Lesson learned is the feature fiction debut of Bálint Szimler, creator of Here I Am, which was screened in Cannes, and Balaton Method. Bálint Szimler was born in Hungary but spent his formative childhood years between ages of two and nine in the United States: and upon returning to Hungary, he was deeply struck by the stark contrast between the American and Hungarian school systems. The film draws partly from his personal experiences and this dual cultural perspective. For Lesson learned, Szimler reunited with his longtime creative partner, Emmy-winning cinematographer Marcell Rév—known for his work on Euphoria, The Idol, and The Story of My Wife—who returned from Hollywood to collaborate on the project.
Lesson learned has won numerous prestigious awards. It premiered at the Locarno Film Festival where it won Special Mention, additionally, Anna Mészöly received the award for Best Acting Performance, while Bálint Szimler was honored with the Boccalino d’Oro Award for Best Director. The film also won the main prize, the Kingfisher Award at the 35th Ljubljana International Film Festival and the Special Mention at the CinEast Film Festival in Luxembourg. Finally, it was awarded Best First Feature at the 44th Hungarian Film Week.
