More than 250,000 immigrants from El Salvador call New England home - according to 2000 census data- making Salvadorans one the largest immigrant group in the New England area. Along with all these Salvadoran residents comes a wealth of culture: soccer, atol de elote, banana and cream empanadas, and, of course, pupusas!

Every August 1st through August 6th, thousands of people gather in the streets of San Salvador – El Salvador’s capital - to celebrate “Las Fiestas Agostinas” and “la bajada” – the transfiguration of the Divine Savior of the World, the Patron Saint and namesake of El Salvador and August 6th is national holiday.

In the summer of 2006 the US Congress declared August 6th as the national Salvadoran-American Day or Dia Del Salvadoreño-Americano. With Res H. Res. 721 the US Congress, recognized the contributions and accomplishments of the Salvadoran community in the United States by celebrating El Día del Salvadoreño-Americano on August 6th. Since then The Salvadoran-American Day has been recognized by other major cities such as Washington D.C, Houston and since 2013 here in Boston. Last year Massachusets Governor Charlie Baker proclaimed our annual event as the official celebration of El Día del Salvadoreño en Massachusetts.
