The CSO’s annual Family Concert is a wonderful introduction to the varied
musical sounds and musical styles of the orchestra, for adults and children of all
ages. The centerpiece of the concert, Nkeiru Okoye’s The Journey of Phillis
Wheatley, is a musical story about a famous African-American poet in 18th -
century Boston, with text by Carolivia Herron. This story will be narrated by the
CSO’s own Carmen Hicks.
Special guest soloist, the talented young artist Talia Kee, will perform the final
movement (Allegro vivacissimo) of the Piotr Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, with
orchestra. More on the program: Hector Berlioz’ dream-like March to the
Scaffold from his Symphonie Fantastique, and our annual audience sing-along.
(Spoiler: it’s Beauty and the Beast this year.)
After the concert, children are invited to our instrument petting zoo, where they
can greet orchestra musicians and try out string, woodwind, percussion and
brass instruments themselves!
The CSO acknowledges the Massachusetts Cultural Council for its support of the
CSO’s 2017-18 season, and Cambridge Trust Company for its generous
underwriting of youth tickets. Instruments for the petting zoo supplied by Rayburn
Music.
Tickets are available at http://www.cambridgesymphony.org. Prices are $15
(adult general seating) and $5 (children age 12 and under, students and seniors).
