EulipiaJazz will be presenting Explorations, a concert of free jazz improvisation and poetry at the Arlington Center for the Arts on Saturday, January 26th from 8-10P. The concert will feature Scott Samenfeld – bass, Erik Van Dam – saxes, and Phil Neighbors – drums. The trio will be joined by special guest poet Carla Schwartz.


The performance will celebrate free improvisation through trio, duo, and solo improvisations. It will also feature poetry as an element in the pieces and as counterpoint to the pieces.


Scott Samenfeld, an Arlington resident and founder of EulipiaJazz, will lead the group on bass. He'll be joined by saxophonist, Erik Van Dam and drummer, Phil Neighbors. Samenfeld leads his own group Muse Stew which performs his compositions and arrangements. He has been leading groups and performing throughout the area since he moved to MA in 1970. He has also been a member of the Arlington Cultural Council (2008-2014) and an advocate for arts funding and local programming in Arlington.


Saxophonist Erik Fan Dam has performed with Samenfeld's group Muse Stew as well as groups under his own name. He is also a visual artist and teaches in the Winchester school system. He has performed widely here in New England and in NYC.


Drummer Phil Neighbors has performed and recorded with many local groups including the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble, Triarachy and the Jeff Robinson Trio which performs regularly at the Lizard Lounge and hosts the poetry slam. He has performed with Samenfeld as part of Caliente Meets Cool which celebrates the music of Latin Jazz band leader and vibraphonist, Cal Tjader. He teaches at the John Payne School of Music in Brookline, MA.


Poet Carla Shwartz is a published author. She has 2 books in print Mother, One More Thing and her latest book, Intimacy with the Wind (Finishing Line Press) She has performed and participated in the poetry slams at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge.


The progrtam will be presented in the Shaira Ali Gallery and Performance Space at the newly renovated Arlington Center for the Arts located at 20 Academy Street. Arlington, MA on the third floor. This will be the first concert presented in the new space. There will be a $15 charge at the door.
