Bebe Beard, DV I am drifting

HallSpace presents Bebe Beard's latest project. An installation using video projections, sculpural forms and objects, slides, and sound. The D and V in the title refers to 2 nautical code flags, when combined signal the message "I am drifting" from ship to ship.

Beard continues to explore methods of expressing her concern for the oceans, and environment. Beard writes, "In my generation we grew up thinking the ocean was the ultimate. It was limitless in its ability to absorb, infinite in its ability to support life. How childish. Through drawing, video sculpture I am trying to give the ocean a voice. I want to articulate what I imagine the waters are saying from the bottom and at the edges. I imagine this body of work to communiqués from the seas transmitted through the use of maritime signal flags. With Whiskey, Kilo, Foxtrot and Xray make visible what the ocean would say as it embraces the land. The sculpture originates from a different point of view. They are the new bodies, new beings the ocean is culturing close to it's floor-bed."

Bebe Beard earned her BFA in 1976, her MFA from Mass College of Art's Studio for Interrelated Media in 1996. In recent years she has received grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, St Botolph's Club Art Foundation and the Gottlieb Foundation Emergency Assistance; held residencies at Djerassi Resident Artists Program, MacDowell Colony and the Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY. She has exhibited in a wide variety of venues – alternative spaces, galleries, and theaters nationally and internationally.
