To mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Boston Public Library's Community History Department partnered with Revolutionary Spaces to offer a free and public program series called "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." Named for the unalienable rights identified in the Declaration—rights that inherently belong to all human beings, and that governments are created to protect—these programs brought people together to explore, question, and find inspiration in the Declaration of Independence.


During two printmaking workshops and four declaration writing workshops at the BPL, library visitors reflected on the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. Displayed together, the art prints and writing pieces made by community members speak to the ongoing American struggle to create and sustain a free society. As a viewer of the exhibition, we invite you to consider: How do I identify with this nation's founding document? What do I celebrate? How do I use my voice in protest?
