Greg Lookerse presents Evocations at A R E A. The work explores the basic elements of sacred and spiritual architecture to revive the experience of these forms through sculpture and drawing. Lookerse' new body of work is based on the artist’s observations of structure, light, sound and forms that provide a transcending feeling within these spaces.
The artist uses paper as a neutral place for these forms to be appreciated in a different context of the specific faiths. Although there are not elements of particular spiritual heritages or beliefs, the aesthetics of such monumental structures are evoked to celebrate pluralistic ideals. Paper here is folded and cut creating geometric forms composed of both the material (the delicate paper) and the immaterial (the light or shadow), allowing for agency to assign meaning to these forms that are expressive, symbolic and spiritual.
Lookerse’ artistic investigation explores symmetry, harmony, openness and novelty through repetition. Repetitive forms or actions in his work are meant to drive one towards the immersive spiritual environment of a ritual. Overall, these paper sculptures of multidimensional layers invite the viewer to examine traditional ideas of beauty as an entry point to explore the mystery of the work, to sympathize with it, and ultimately to reflect on the profundity of the viewer’s interior life through meditation and interrogation.
Greg Lookerse is an interdisciplinary artist who has been working since 2009. He received his MFA from Tufts University in conjunction with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in 2014. Originally from California, Lookerse now works in Boston and the New England area and exhibits his work internationally.
