The Boston Juneteenth Committee (BJC) and the National Center of Afro-American Artists (NCAAA) are thrilled to announce and invite you to our Eleventh Big Head Community Festival (BHCF) on the NCAAA Museum grounds, which is located at 300 Walnut Avenue, Roxbury, Massachusetts 02119 on Saturday September 14, 2024.
The day begins at noon with 'Putting Your Touch on Greatness,' the annual ritual during which the community washes and polishes John Wilson’s monumental sculpture, Eternal Presence. Please wear clothing that you don't mind getting wet or stained.
This will be followed by an afternoon of music, dance, and poetry with multi-disciplinary artist Phree as the host.
Additionally, the day will be highlighted by a lifetime achievement award presented to African dance historian and choreographer De Ama Battle.
Among the artists performing are the jazz quartet The The Fred Woodard Collective, singer Lovely Hoffman, dancer Kaleisha Chance, singer Ashley Villard, rapper HAAWWS and poet & historian L’Merchie Frazier.
Come enjoy a late summer day of fun, food and fellowship.
The festival theme is 'Harmony in Motion: Canceling Violence Together,' which coincides with the launch of 'Cancel Violence: Artists Speak,' a public art project and exhibition that will have its formal opening on Sunday, October 6, 2024, along with additional complementary programs throughout the fall.
There will also be an announcement of the 54th season of Black Nativity, with performances on December 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22, 2024, as well as the 15th annual Juneteenth Emancipation Observance on Thursday, June 19, 2025
