To many Bostonians, the Asian experience begins and ends in Chinatown. To Bostonians of Asian descent, the experience of diaspora and "being Asian" contains so many more multitudes. The stories we share about family members immigrating, ethnic food, and diaspora drama bring life to our kitchen tables and animate our memories. Now, it's time for us to uplift and preserve these stories.
DUTY FREE is an open mic and oral history project aimed at telling the Asian diaspora experience. We welcome both established storytellers/poets as well as community members who just like to share to come and share a 5-minute story or poem about migration, travel, belonging, and home.
In enjoining an oral history of our experiences, the stories shared at this open mic will be live recorded and published to SoundCloud. All event participants will also receive a link to a resource guide which contains information on developing your story for performance or publication.
This is a free event, and RSVP information is forthcoming. We encourage you to use the Facebook RSVP system to follow the event page for updates.
Sign-up begins at 5:30 and is first come, first serve. Stories in all languages welcome.
