Enjoy a long summer evening on and around Crane Beach! An evening hike takes us through the spectacular dunes system behind the beach, then straight into the sunset back to the beach!
Named for the Red Moon for the reddish hue it often takes on in the sultry summer haze, August’s full moon is also called the Green Corn Moon and the Grain Moon. Colonial Americans dubbed this moon the Dog Days Moon, while North American fishing tribes, who knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this full moon, called it the Sturgeon Moon.
Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand (which makes for a more strenuous hike), for approximately 3 miles. Bring water and dress for the weather to maximize comfort. You are welcome to bring a flashlight or headlamp, but we may ask for moments of total darkness to fully enjoy the moon and the shadows it makes on the dunes.
Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible and issued full refunds.
The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and river boat trips will be emailed to registrants before the event at the address provided upon registration.
