Join the Creative Somerville Series in one of our monthly 'fireside chats’ with Mike Swartz of Upstatement.


Mike Swartz is a designer, programmer and entrepreneur living in Somerville, MA. In 2008 he founded Upstatement, an award winning interactive studio in Boston with clients that include ESPN, The Boston Globe, Penguin Random House, Harvard, MIT Media Lab, NPR and more. Upstatement's work focuses on creating forward-thinking content-rich digital products for media companies, non-profits and museums. Mike's path to the present has been "non-traditional" at best, from his first job as a yo-yo salesman at age 15 to dropping out of school to work as a designer and art director for The Boston Globe. The story of Mike and Upstatement is an unlikely tale of applying a few key values consistently and the learning and opportunity that occurs when you're open to pretty much any possibility.
