‘A Pilgrim’s Solace’ presents songs by John Dowland and lute solos by his Italian contemporaries. The program evokes Dowland’s travels in Italy, and his conflicted identity as a Catholic Englishman at a time of political and religious upheaval. Dowland’s songs express the sorrowful longing so characteristic of his work, and perhaps reflective of his spiritual difficulties. The lute solos include works by the Italian lutenist Simone Molinaro, who Dowland likely met in his travels, and intabulated madrigals of Marenzio, who Dowland idolized but was never able to meet. Our program offers a window into the cross-currents at this critical moment in history, as the Renaissance turns to the Baroque. With Sophie Michaux, mezzo-soprano, Adam Simon, baritone, and Dani Zanuttini-Frank, lute
