Join award-winning artist Hatsue Iimuro of Japan, internationally recognized as one of the world’s most accomplished Sailor’s Valentine artists, for an exceptional hands-on workshop devoted to this rare and historic art form.
Sailor’s Valentines were cherished 19th-century keepsakes, created by sailors as enduring expressions of love and devotion for those awaiting them at home. In this special workshop, participants will create a refined, contemporary Sailor’s Valentine guided directly by Iimuro’s master-level expertise.
The design is an original composition featuring the traditional Japanese pattern Seigaiha, an auspicious motif symbolizing everlasting peace, resilience, and a harmonious life. Under expert instruction, you will compose an intricate shell mosaic using carefully curated shells, selected specifically for this design. Your piece will be set within a 10-inch octagonal Japanese oak frame, custom crafted by highly skilled Japanese woodworkers, elevating the work to a lasting art object suitable for display.
All materials are provided. Participants will leave with a beautiful, exhibition-quality piece, rich in history, symbolism, and craftsmanship—a truly special work created through a rare opportunity to learn from a master. No prior experience required. Space is limited. Advance registration is required. Registration is for two half-day sessions.
