The Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum presents
Brahms Requiem
and Bach Actus tragicus, BWV 106
featuring GRAMMY®-nominated pianists Justin Blackwell and Scott Allen Jarrett
with soloists Deborah Selig (soprano) and Sumner Thompson (baritone)
Johannes Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, one of the most beloved masterworks of the choral tradition, explores universal themes of mortality, compassion, grief, and comfort in a work the composer described as a “human requiem.” Collegium’s novel performance of this treasured masterwork, sung in English translation, utilizes Brahms’s four-hand piano arrangement, illuminating the characteristic nuance and intimacy found in the composer’s chamber music. The chorus is joined by pianists Justin Blackwell and Scott Allen Jarrett, who both received a GRAMMY® Nomination in 2012 for their performance of the work’s four-hand piano version. Collegium’s program also includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s Actus tragicus, BWV 106, one of his most well-known funeral cantatas that also responds to mourning and loss with hope and solace through music. Together, these two sublime yet deeply personal works provide extraordinary stylistic and thematic complements to one another, allowing all to share in their beauty.
