Join us for a deep dive into a single piece from the Collection with a CAM Docent, Maggie Rosa. Begin with conversation, a short presentation, and complimentary coffee at the Carlson Center, then move to the James Center to view the original.

Emile Gruppé was one of Gloucester’s most beloved painters and an important figure in American Impressionism. Gruppé made Gloucester his home in the early 1920s, drawn by the harbor’s ever-changing light, bustling fishing boats, and rugged coastline—all of which became central themes in his vibrant, plein air canvases. As founder of the Gloucester School of Painting on Rocky Neck, he not only created iconic works but also mentored generations of artists, leaving an indelible mark on Cape Ann’s creative community. Join us at the Carlson Education Center as we explore how Gruppé’s bold brushwork, luminous color, and deep connection to Gloucester helped shape the region’s artistic identity and earned him a lasting place in the pantheon of American art.

This program will repeat on November 20.
