What is citizenship? How is it conferred? Why is it controversial? We’ll look at the development of citizenship in the United States from its colonial origins, through the 14th Amendment and the Wong Kim Ark decision, down to the present day. We’ll examine the competing theories for citizenship, jus soli, jus sanguines, and social compact theory, and explain how each influenced the granting of citizenship in U.S. history. And we’ll examine the recent Supreme Court case to see how it reflects the politics of our time and its consequences for the future of this nation. Handouts provided. Instructor: Brian Bixby
