Join the AMC’s Boston Chapter as they present a unique slideshow & video hosted by Charlie Linville – the 32 year-old US Marine who, having lost part of his leg in Afghanistan, became the first combat amputee to reach the 29,029’ summit of Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain.

Born in Boise, Idaho and having graduated from Boise High School, Charlie enlisted in the Marine Corps to pursue his aspirations to serve in the United States military. Following tours of duty in Iraq, he became an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician and, following his deployment in Afghanistan, began the highly dangerous work of disarming IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). It was while conducting an IED sweep in Afghanistan in 2011 that Charlie was blasted into the air and brought directly down into the blast crater. He suffered a traumatic brain injury in addition to severe spinal trauma and two amputated fingers. He eventually lost his foot to a below-the-knee amputation during the summer of 2013 after fighting for over a year to save it.

In 2014, Charlie agreed to join The Heroes Project, a nonprofit organization started by former biker Tim Medvetz, who summited Everest in 2007, six years after suffering life-threatening injuries in a motorcycle crash. The experience inspired him to create The Heroes Project to help catastrophically injured war veterans climb the world's tallest mountains, giving them the chance to renew faith in themselves and put their lives back together through the challenge and triumph of climbing.

Although Charlie’s attempt to summit Mt. Everest was halted
in April 2014 after 16 sherpas lost their lives in an avalanche and, again in April 2015 following the tragic earthquake in Nepal, he eventually realized his ambition and stood on the highest point on the Earth on May 21, 2016.

This April 9th, come and meet Charlie, watch a short video and
hear the story of his epic journey from the war zone of Afghanistan to the lofty heights of Mount Everest - a story of endurance, dedication and extreme courage and of one man’s determination to triumph over adversity.
