Musical transformation is the core of Chameleon Arts Ensemble’s November chamber music program titled “with infinite refrain.” As Thomas Edison famously said: “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Elliott Carter’s 1949 tour de force, Eight Etudes and a Fantasy, demonstrates an endless palette of colors from the woodwind family in a lesson on invention and craft, and Beethoven dazzles with his virtuosic Cello Variations, Op. 66 on Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. Michael Colgrass conjures a vast sonic landscape from the sparest of resources in his Variations for four drums and viola, and Brahms with his beloved Piano Quartet No. 1 in g minor, Op. 25, displays his masterful ability to spin the smallest motives into immensely satisfying large-scale works.
