I'm delighted to present the first collaborative performance of Boston's wonderful Çeşni Trio (Tev Stevig, Fabio Pirozzolo & Michael K. Harrist) and Peter Jaques, clarinetist & trumpeter.
Stevig and Harrist first met in Istanbul in 2010. Back home in Boston, they found themselves playing and studying Ottoman art music together in Orkestra Marhaba. As an idea for a trio began to take hold, the group found a deep kinship with Pirozzolo and Çesni Trio was born.
A modal music tradition, Türk sanat müzii (Turkish art music) developed in the urban areas of the Ottoman Empire and has a history of over 500 years. The tradition includes a wide range of repertoire, composers, and practitioners. Çesni Trio draws from this great tradition and the more modern stylings of contemporary musician-composers such as Erkan Our, Ross Daly, Murat Aydemir, and Efrén López.
Currently based in Athens, Peter has been celebrated in the Bay Area Eastern European & Near Eastern music scene since 1995, for his innovative meld of traditional Balkan Rom, Greek, Turkish, & klezmer styles with his own deeply soulful approach. He performs principally on the Bb clarinet & truba (rotary valve flugelhorn), as well as Egyptian nay (reed flute), alto saxophone, & Turkish G clarinet.
This concert takes place at ARTSpace, a pop-up gallery and intimate performance space that's the brainchild of arts-lover and community-minded entrepreneur Luisa Harris. It's a quick 5 min walk from either Roxbury Crossing on the Orange Line or Brigham Circle on the Green E Line. Street parking also available.
