The Coolidge is thrilled to partner with Mount Auburn Cemetery for an outdoor double feature! This unique event, known as ‘Cemetery Cinema’ will take place at sunset (7pm) on Tuesday, September 26 at the historic and beautiful Mount Auburn Cemetery.
Confronting Death itself, Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal will begin the evening, followed by Hal Ashby’s iconic celebration of life, Harold and Maude.
Mount Auburn Cemetery is located 580 Mount Auburn Street in Cambridge. In the event of rain, the screening will take place the following day (Wednesday, September 27). Parking will be available at the cemetery and light concessions will be sold. Chairs, blankets, and snacks are encouraged, but no alcohol please.
Mount Auburn Cemetery is an active burial place and a sacred site to mourners. Please keep this in mind as you set up your seating space and refrain from touching or leaning against any of the monuments or headstones.
About The Seventh Seal
In one of his earliest film appearences, Max von Sydow (Hour of the Wolf, The Exorcist) gives the performance of a lifetime as this war-weary crusader returning home from ten years in battle, only to find his homeland decimated by the plague. With its beautifully integrated symbolism, breathtaking cinematography, and memorable set pieces, The Seventh Seal is the hugely influential meditation on the meaning of life in the face of darkness.
About Harold and Maude
Working from a script by Colin Higgins, director Hal Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care, bohemian octogenarian. Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence, Harold and Maude features memorable set pieces and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.
About Mount Auburn Cemetery
Founded in 1831 as America’s first landscaped cemetery, Mount Auburn Cemetery is a place of exquisite horticultural beauty and cultural importance. A National Historic Landmark, its renowned landscape inspired the creation of the nation’s public parks. Still an active burial place, Mount Auburn Cemetery also provides comfort and solace to countless families, with hundreds of burials and cremations taking place annually. The Friends of Mount Auburn, the Cemetery’s non-profit education trust offers more than 100 public programs each year to celebrate Mount Auburn’s many facets and raises funds to support the preservation of this national treasure.
