Ahead of Mother's Day, join Oxfam and Workbar South Station for a free cocktail reception and photo exhibit featuring powerful women and mothers around the world.
Muthoni Muriu, Oxfam's Senior Director of International Programs, will give a keynote address.
Perhaps Maya Angelou captured the strength and beauty of motherhood best when she said, “To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing falling colors of a rainbow.” The role of a mother can take many forms—birth mothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters, community leaders, women who adopt orphaned children in refugee camps. But nearly every mother has one thing in common: the willingness to place the needs of those they care for above their own.
Oxfam has a presence in more than 90 countries, so we know from experience that in times of hardship, women are often disproportionally affected. Almost 70 percent of the world’s hungry are women. Regardless, mothers, especially those facing food insecurity, will do whatever they can to make sure their children are fed, even if it means not eating themselves. In times of displacement, families are often separated and women must navigate how to keep their children safe as they face the uncertainty and dangers of being forced from their home.
We have seen mothers overcome unimaginable obstacles to ensure their children’s safety. In honor of Mother’s Day, we celebrate a mother’s strength. The images you will see in this photo exhibit, captured by Oxfam photographers, highlight inspirational women from around the world, who although they are dealing with challenges such as gender discrimination, natural disasters, displacement, will go to incredible lengths to make sure their children are protected and loved.
