A multimedia event with David Bowie producer Jeff Rougvie & live music by The Daily Pravda. This event will bring to life the magic of David Bowie, offering a first-hand glimpse of his uniquely-gifted and chameleon-like genius. Join as we celebrate one of our era’s most creative artists!

In 1989, Rykodisc, a tiny independent record label located on Pickering Wharf in Salem, Massachusetts, was hand-picked by David Bowie to curate his amazing body of work spanning 1969-1980, including classics like Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Low, Heroes, and Scary Monsters.

What followed then set a new standard for audio-visual presentation, re-affirmed David Bowie’s genius for a new generation and helped him rediscover his creative powers. One man behind the scenes in this amazing story was Jeff Rougvie, Rykodisc’s VP of Special Projects, who worked directly with Bowie on nearly 20 releases over 10 years.

During this special live event Rougvie will discuss the magic of Bowie, using visuals, unseen material, accompanied by Boston’s own The Daily Pravda, who will perform live versions of some of Bowie’s most memorable songs, followed by a Q&A session.

About Jeff Rougvie
Jeff Rougvie has nearly 20 years experience at Rykodisc, a Salem, MA-based label - at one time the biggest indie record company in the world. He worked with a wide range of artists including Big Star, Andrew Bird, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Devo, Galaxie 500, comedian Bill Hicks, The Misfits, Mission of Burma, Morphine, Bob Mould & Sugar, The Raspberries, Ringo Starr, They Might Be Giants, Frank Zappa and many more. He currently consults on a variety of pop culture subjects and has started a new re-issue label.

About The Daily Pravda
As is the case with most bands, The Daily Pravda formed through a wanted ad. In early 2005 singer David Jackel posted on Boston music forums in search of “a guitarist to help do to Ziggy Stardust what Oasis did to the Beatles.” Adam Anderson joined on several weeks later, and the new band played an acoustic set at Felt night club in downtown Boston as an unannounced warm-up act for singer-songwriter Howie Day. Later that year, a proper debut performance followed at The Pill in nearby Allston. Being Boston’s “Britpop and modern indie dance party,” The Pill was a natural fit for The Daily Pravda, and helped launch the band into their hometown’s music scene.

From the beginning The Daily Pravda tapped into a nostalgia for decades-old music from across the pond. The band’s debut release She’s so Mature (2006) drew comparisons to Pulp, Suede, the Smiths, and other musical descendants of early Bowie. Follow up Burning Bible Diamonds (2009) brought synthesizers and vocal harmonies into the mix. Over the years the band has moved away from its earlier glam leanings, favoring a more austere aesthetic. As a reviewer recently observed, “It was a strange mixture, since they have the kind of Ziggy Stardust vocals you’d expect to see laser beams shoot out off… they sounded like a glam band without the glitter.”

While The Daily Pravda’s direction has long since moved beyond the initial wanted ad’s goal of a glam rock revival, the group continues to find inspiration in Bowie’s prolific career and constant reinvention, the pop sensibilities of the artists who followed in his footsteps, and a healthy disregard for authenticity.

The Daily Pravda are:

Adam Anderson: lead guitar
David Jackel: vocals, guitar
Mike Gonzales: bass guitar
Ken Marcou: drums
Tom Roppelt: everything else
