“CARRIE MAE WEEMS: I once knew a girl…,” an intimate look at the acclaimed artist’s body of work through three of its recurring themes, continues through Jan 7, 2017.


Cooper Gallery presents an intimate, curated collection of evocative work by the internationally acclaimed photography and video installation artist Carrie Mae Weems. “I once knew a girl…” highlights Weems’ storytelling that questions social constructs of power, race and space, and poses a more multi-dimensional concept of humanity. Organized in three parts (Beauty, Legacies, Landscapes) the installation centers on Weems’ expressions of black beauty, and includes never-before-seen pieces as well as selections from previous series, newly re-contextualized.
