These days, there are limitless job opportunities within the tech industry. While you might not know as much about the possibilities that exist within tech today, we hope that you will come away from First-Gens in Tech with more insight and information.
Join us on Friday, November 10 for the second annual “Breaking Barriers: First-Gens in Tech,” a day-long event for first-generation young folks from the Greater Boston Area interested in learning more about what it really means to work in tech.
Who is considered a “first-generation"? Any person:
who was not born in the US OR
whose parents were not born in the US OR
who is the first in their family to attend college OR
who is the first in their family to enter the corporate world
Why should you attend?
Our goal for this event is to provide you with the context, community, and real life examples of other first-gen folks doing great things in tech. We will create an opportunity for you to:
Meet first-generation leaders thriving in Boston’s tech scene
Hear from first-gen HubSpot employees from different departments about their experiences starting their careers
Leave with actionable tips and takeaways to help kickstart your career regardless of which career path you choose

Check out the full schedule for the event below:
9:30 - 10:00AM: Registration & Breakfast
Arrive at HubSpot, grab your swag, have a bite to eat, meet new people, and get ready for the day ahead.
10:00 - 10:10AM: Welcome to Breaking Barriers: First-Gens in Tech
Why are we doing this? Learn about how this event came to be, what we do here, and what you can expect to take away from your time with us.
10:10 - 11:10AM: First-Gens in Tech Panel: How We Got Here
Are you interested in a career in tech, but unsure where to start? We have a panel of folks from different backgrounds with various career journeys and experiences who are going to share their stories about finding themselves in tech.
11:10 - 11:50AM: A Day in the Life: Lightning Talks
"Okay, so you work in tech, but what do you do?" Hear from different folks about what they've been working on during these lightning-fast talks.
11:50 - 12:40PM: Lunch & Networking
Fuel up for the rest of the day while chatting with other attendees and HubSpotters from throughout the organization.
12:40 - 1:10PM: Keynote from HubSpot Co-Founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah
One of our founders, Dharmesh Shah, came to the United States from a rural town in India as a young man. Hear his story about growing up abroad, coming to the US, and the path that led to starting HubSpot and building his career in tech.
1:10 - 2:10PM: Finding the Best Job For You - Breakout Session
Whether you know Javascript or Illustrator, are an excellent writer or are a customer experience superstar, there is a job in tech that you'd be perfect for. Knowing where to look is the tricky part. We will split into two groups: technical and non-technical. Then, recruiters at HubSpot will go over the different teams and positions that fall into both of these groups.
2:10 - 2:55PM: Landing the Job, According to a Recruiter
Hear directly from a recruiter about the Dos and Don't of finding and applying for jobs. We'll cover everything from where to look to how to format your resume, and even explore whether cover letters are still relevant
2:55 - 3:00PM: Closing Remarks, followed by networking
We'll wrap up the day together, and end it with some professional networking among attendees and HubSpotters.

Who will benefit most from this event?
This event is designed for first-generation folks in higher education, continuing education, alternative education, or service year programs who are looking to learn about how to break into the tech industry. You will benefit if you are passionate and curious about the technology industry.
Who would not benefit from attending?
If you already have full-time working experience or are pursuing a graduate degree, First-Gens in Tech is likely not for you. This event is intended for those who are unfamiliar with a process you have already gone through. However, check back to our Eventbrite profile or "Like" HubSpotLife on Facebook for networking and professional development opportunities that are a better fit for your level of experience.
We regret that we are not able to accommodate school administrators, career counselors, or program managers at this particular event.
Do I need to attend for the full day?
Yes, please plan to be at the event from 10AM to 3PM. (Of course, we understand if you cannot stay all day, but there are valuable sessions throughout the day we'd hate for you to miss!)
Do I have to bring my resume?
It's not required, but we will have a talk that includes how to format your resume so you may want to take notes.
What should I bring with me?
Your wonderful self and readiness to learn about tech! Feel free to bring a laptop or tablet if that's how you prefer to take notes, or your phone charger. We will provide notebooks and pens for you.
