Love a good story? Boston Lyric Opera invites you to join us in your favorite reading nook as we pair some of our favorite novels with each of this Season’s operas. From crazy love stories to epic journeys, we’ll explore the common threads that bring all these stories together – both on stage and on the page.
Join Boston Lyric Opera and Trident on Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00 PM for our spring club discussion of the Season. We’ll consider two novels – The Power by Naomi Alderman and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood – as well as discuss the stories told through our spring operas, The Rape of Lucretia and The Handmaid’s Tale.
The Power: What if women suddenly gained a new, extraordinary physical power? One that gives them not just the power to defend themselves, but also complete physical dominance over men? Naomi Alderman muses on this idea in her thrilling dystopian novel The Power, an exploration of male and female dynamics, and the many possibilities when the balance is shifted. Paired with The Rape of Lucretia, this story provides an alternate reality to imagine how Lucretia’s circumstances might (or might not) have changed.
The Handmaid’s Tale: The iconic novel on which the opera The Handmaid’s Tale is based, Margaret Atwood’s classic dystopian tale tells the story of Offred, a handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, formerly known as the United States. This gripping work of speculative fiction remains as poignant and timely today as when it was written more than thirty years ago. Don’t miss this opportunity to prepare for your experience of this rarely staged opera.
