Friday 10/4: Boston Immersive Music Festival Presents The Porch Trio Quintet
The Outerspace Visual Communicator(OVC) returns to Boston with original music from The Porch Trio Quintet on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 and 9:00
Boston Immersive Music Festival
The seven-weekend long Boston Immersive Music Festival brings together the best of experimental, jazz, classical, and traditional music that Boston has to offer with the immersive visuals of the OVC-3D.
The Porch Trio Quintet
Jorrit Dijkstra - alto saxophone, compositions
Nate McBride - acoustic and electric bass
Eric Rosenthal - drums and percussion
Eric Hofbauer – guitar
Gabe Boyarin – guitar
The Porch Trio Quintet is the latest project of The Porch Trio: a guitar band that features the Trio plus Boston jazz veteran Eric Hofbauer, and young talent Gabe Boyarin on electric guitars. The band uses a microtonal tuning system between the instruments, which gives it a mesmerizing and dreamy sound, full of collective melodic and multi-rhythmic layerings.
The Porch Trio is an avant-garde jazz/improv group that started at the Quincy (MA) Porch Fest of 2016, and has since played many performances in the Boston area. The group draws from various traditions in free jazz and improvised music, and the use of analog electronics and a vintage electric bass gives the band a grungy, experimental rock and noise edge. The members are all veterans of the Boston avant-garde jazz community, combined with an extensive international performance experience rooted in the Boston, Chicago and Amsterdam improvisation scenes. In 2021 the trio started the project PorchBone, with trombonists Jeb Bishop, Michael Prentky, and Bill Lowe, with compositions by Jorrit Dijkstra. This project juxtaposes the abstract, improvised sounds of The Porch Trio against the velvety sound of a trombone section, inspired by the sound of the Duke Ellington and Sun Ra big bands. The group released an album on Driff Records.
The OVC-3D
The OVC returns to Boston! Bill Sebastian created the original OVC in the 1970s and performed on stage with Sun Ra at theaters in Boston and New York. The videos they made in the 1980s were recently featured in a retrospective at the Roulette Theater in Brooklyn and in Inside the Light World released by Strut Records. The OVC allowed an artist to create visual projections with the same total spontaneous control that a musician has over sound. Sebastian's OVC-3D extends that concept to immersive 3D worlds that can be entered using VR headsets. Bill will be performing live on the OVC-3D at every festival event, accompanying the musicians as they explore a wide range of musical styles. The audience will be able to view the art both through projections of the OVC and VR headsets. Learn more at visualmusicsystems.com.
