DO GOOD + LEARN NEW SKILLS + MEET INCREDIBLE PEOPLE + BE AN ENVIRONMENTAL WARRIOR
PLEASE NOTE: On the anniversary weekend of the Women's March, this sew-a-thon will double as a "Resistitch" event. Creating bags helps our planet, AND, we'll have opportunities to write postcards to elected officials, find ways to support progressives in the mid-term elections, and other connections to the Resistance. Come to sew with a side of Resistance!
JOIN US for a two day community sew-a-thon for BOSTON'S FIRST BAG SHARE following the victory of Boston's Plastic Bag Ban in December 2017! We had our first dynamic sew-a-thon in May 2017 and had humans age 7 to 73 working side by side, because they believe in this project and the impact that it will make on our city, our community and the world.
SAT, JAN 20 10am-8pm + SUN, JAN 21 12-5pm
LEARN new skills, try your hand at new machines, have great conversations and put your hands, mind and heart to work for a great cause. Come for an hour, stay for a day- I must warn you, it is addicting and some people came both days.
WE NEED PEOPLE POWER!!
CAN'T SEW? No problem! There are so many ways to help: ironing, folding, cutting, pinning, collecting fabric, and even learn how to sew. Can't be at the sew-a-thon, but want to help? Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
and you can help in one of the most critical ways. We have dozens of people that work from home on pieces that go to the next Boomerang hero!
WE NEED DONATIONS!!!
sheets- flat sheets are best
Things to consider about donating fabric:
Think recycle, reuse and repurpose
Be sure fabric items are clean and free of debris, mold and mildew
Lighter weight fabrics work best (cotton or cotton blends)
Smaller pieces are acceptable as long as they are the size of a pillowcase.
WHAT IS A BAG SHARE?
What happens when you go to a store and forget to bring a bag? What if there was a reusable handmade bag waiting at a store for you to borrow like Hubway brings community sharing to bikes?
TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS
The City of Boston passed a single-use plastic bag ban in December 2017!! Beginning in Dec. 2018, we can say goodby to the 219 MILLION BAGS that are used in BOSTON each year! However, one of the big concerns heard from opposition is that a bag ban would negatively affect low income residents as well as senior citizens who may not have access to reusable bags.
WE HAVE A SOLUTION!
We are launching the first BAG SHARE in Boston this Spring. The idea is that fabric, resources, space, time and people-power will be donated to create reusable cloth bags. These bags will be displayed at stores and people can take one from the box, use one or more and return it. We are essentially a chapter of the Australian based Boomerang Bags www.boomerangbags.org
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
There are many things to do in getting this off the ground and you don’t need to know how to sew to help. To get this all done we are going old school and bringing back piece work. People can help anyway their desires or skills will take them. No sewing skills are necessary. But if you are an experienced sewer we are over the moon and would love you to not only help sew but to also be there to problem solve and be a SEWING or FABRIC CAPTAIN. Can't sew? No worries! This should be fun, so come for any amount of time you can!
SKILLS BEYOND SEWING NEEDED
Collecting and washing fabric
Ironing- Lots of this will be happening!
Measuring and cutting fabric
Learning to sew straight lines
Bringing food or helping pick up food for volunteers
If you are helpful and want to be part of the solution you should be there!
Niblets and drinks provided!
