Boston Baroque opens its 24/25 season with Joseph Haydn’s Die Schöpfung (The Creation), the electrifying oratorio that captured Europe's imagination at its 1798 premiere. This masterpiece, featuring radiant solo performances by Hera Hyesang Park (soprano), Paul Appleby (tenor), and Nicholas Newton (bass-baritone), brings to life the wonders of creation in three parts, from the chaos before time to the awakening of Adam and Eve. Experience Haydn's brilliant orchestration, stunning choruses, and powerful use of light and sound in one of his greatest works.
Concert Info:
During his visits to England in the 1790s, Haydn was inspired to compose a grand oratorio after hearing George Frideric Handel’s oratorios performed with large ensembles. Accompanied by his close friend, music historian Charles Burney, Haydn experienced works like Israel in Egypt, which featured vivid musical depictions of scenes—a technique that influenced Haydn’s use of tone painting in The Creation.
Determined to create a similar scale, Haydn blended this dramatic approach with the classical style for which he was renowned.
From its first performance in Vienna in 1798, Die Schöpfung, also known as The Creation, caused an unprecedented sensation throughout Europe. It was seen as the crowning achievement of the greatest living composer, and box office receipts for the premiere broke all records. With tickets hard to come by, market stalls had to be cleared in front of the theater, and foot police were hired to control the crowd.
Following the Paris premiere, Napoleon — who was nearly assassinated in the plot of Rue Saint-Nicaise on his way to the theater — had a medal struck in honor of the composer.
