The Salvation Army to Distribute 3,000 Backpacks in Boston

Registration is open for Annual School Supply Giveaway to meets needs of struggling families

BOSTON — The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division is teaming up with Garden Neighborhood Charities—the philanthropic arm of the TD Garden—and The City of Boston for the 11th Annual “Back-to-School Distribution” on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at The Salvation Army’s Boston Kroc Center, 650 Dudley Street, Dorchester. Nearly 3,000 Boston-area youth and their families will enjoy giveaways and a fun, activity-filled afternoon with a special appearance by Blades from the Boston Bruins.

“On average, families spend over $650 for each child on new clothes, supplies, backpacks, and technology,” said Jeffrey Bailey, Director of Social Services, The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division. “With inflation stretching many budgets, checking everything off the list can be a heavy burden, especially for the families we work with. Many of the families we serve are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Giving them something as simple as writing utensils and paper are things that can determine the progress and achievement of their child in the classroom.”

Event registration is open to residents across every zip code in the City of Boston. All pre-registered children will receive a backpack full of back-to-school supplies and hygiene products.

“This event provides a positive experience, while playing a crucial role in the academic and personal lives of our city’s youth,” said Amy Latimer, President, TD Garden. “We love being able to come together with other volunteer groups because we are preparing Boston’s youth for a successful school year in a fun, meaningful, and engaging way.”

As one of the nation’s largest non-profit organizations, The Salvation Army opens its doors to children and families in need throughout every zip code in Massachusetts without discrimination.

Boston residents can register for assistance and this year’s Back-to-School Distribution at: www.salvationarmyma.org/backtoschool. Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are also available.

“At The Salvation Army, we focus on serving the whole family,” Bailey said. “Little things can build a child’ self-esteem and make a lifelong difference.”
