Raúl Gonzalez III has developed a working practice of painting, illustration and writing since growing up between El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. His most recent work was found in the book Lowriders in Space, written and illustrated with author Cathy Camper was nominated for the 2016-2017 Texas BlueBonnet Award. For this same project, Gonzalez III was recently awarded the Pura Belpre Gold Medal in Illustration from the American Library Association which honors artists whose work best portrays Latino cultural experience in a work of literature for young people. During this artist talk, Raúl will discuss how he became an artist and his process for creating characters for the books he co-creates and illustrates.
