Speaker: Ichiro Takayoshi, CHAT Faculty Fellow and Associate Professor of English at Tufts University
Takayoshi will present a chapter from his book-in-progress, Enjoy the Arts Because It's Irrational Not To. His talk will focus on the theory of art addiction that models lovers of art as rational addicts. This modelling has some benefits that other rival theories of art consumption lack. 1) It explains the love of art with parsimony -- strictly within the framework of rational utility-maximizing behavior. 2) It educates contemporary consumers on how to optimize their resource allocation at all major stages of their lives. 3) It provides art instructors with a theoretical account of what they are doing in classrooms as well as an effective rhetoric for their public advocacy of art education.
