Our focus for aMaSSiT 2022 are dance/movement makers exploring a passionate practice. While all are welcome to apply and will benefit from the program, the aMaSSiT Lab will offer sessions that include working with subject matters and realms of thought that are driven by individualized areas of investigation. These can include awareness of societal concerns – justice, humanity, environment – but are not limited to these examples. The lab will be designed to bring tenets of choreography into dialogue with these passionate subject areas, deepening the skill and craft to effectively communicate through the craft of performance/dance making.
For aMaSSiT 2022 we are collaborating with Monkeyhouse, an award winning local nonprofit that connects communities to choreography, as part of their Covid Collaborations program. This collaboration between Monkeyhouse and The Dance Complex illustrates the spirit of adaptive thinking and resource sharing that we hope to promote in this session of aMaSSiT. By emphasizing both artistic and administrative process, and through the inclusion of uniquely diverse dance makers, aMaSSiT creates a dynamic synergy of reflection and reevaluation in new contexts.
In the past, The Dance Complex has invited a variety of performance makers to join the Lab, including those specializing in different genres – tap, burlesque, musical theater, contemporary ballet, and modern – as well as gifted thought-artists/teachers in facilitator roles, bringing societal and cultural awareness lens to our work with a focus on “other-ed” peoples and perspectives. The aMaSSiT program has received recognition and praise from dance professionals both locally and nationally, including Dance Magazine.
