About the Book

When Kevin decides to come out to his Filipino parents at the dinner table, he expects them to create some drama. What he didn't anticipate was for his parents to ignore him entirely. Kevin is tired of feeling overlooked at home and at school when he is presented with the opportunity to reinvent himself with the help of Raymond, the most popular and admired gay kid in school. With Raymond’s guidance (and particular taste in fashion), life is suddenly looking a lot brighter.

But, perfection comes at a cost. Life as Raymond’s pet project has its own demanding expectations, including abandoning his old “uncool” friends and his beloved journalism club. Kevin is forced to confront the hard truth: Is it worth changing who you are if it means becoming something you’re not?

COMING OUT PERFECT emerges as the tender first book in a two book series about identity, self-worth, and the high cost of fitting in if it means leaving parts of yourself behind.

About the Author

Richard Mercado (he/him) is a Filipino cartoonist and graphic designer whose minicomic I Owe It to My Parents to Not Come Out earned him a 2023 Ignatz nomination for Promising New Talent. He has an MFA in sequential art from Savannah College of Art and Design and works as a production artist for Skybound Entertainment.
