Cambridge-based company Ruckus Dance will present ALL BY MYSELF, an evening of dances performed in silence that aims to shift how we consume dance. Directed by dance-maker and “anti-choreographer” Michael Figueroa, the evening will consist of an eight-person reconstruction of a 2016 work called “choreography makes me mental: anybody”, a meditation on space, familiarity, and acclimation for both viewer and performer; two duets about potentiality and changes over time in relationships, featuring couples Em Papineau & Sofia Engleman and Joy Davis & Eric Mullis; and a solo by Michael Figueroa, investigating what it takes to keep yourself going. Each dance explores solitude and companionship, by ourselves and in relation to others. Ultimately, the evening insists on presence, the necessity of making choices, and constant curiosity.


Often, there is limited control over how we interact with contemporary dance performance. ALL BY MYSELF will be a "choose your own adventure" experience: audience members are encouraged to bring headphones or earplugs, giving them the responsibility for curating their own experience over the course of the evening. Audio suggestions for each piece will be included in the program, but ultimately it is up to the viewer to decide what to listen to. In the space of this performance, you can choose to engage, disengage, focus wholly, use your peripheral vision, meditate on what silence is, and enjoy bodies activating a large space.


Through intentionally exhausting and perplexing dances, Ruckus Dance works to open up performance spaces that both provoke conversation and bewilder the viewer, driving audiences to ask questions about the logic of what is happening before them. Come and be ready to take part.
