THE GRIFFIN MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of the highly acclaimed photographer Alanna Airitam. Titled The Golden Age, the exhibition will be held at the historic Sanborn House of the Winchester Historical Society. Running from July 18th to September 1st, 2023, this captivating showcase will present a collection of captivating portraits exploring race, identity, representation, and empowerment.
In The Golden Age, Airitam invites her peers to pose in the style of Dutch Golden Age portraiture, drawing attention to the underrepresentation of diverse faces in traditional art institutions. Through her thought-provoking work, she challenges the dominance of whiteness in American cultural institutions, and how it is connected to systemic power. The exhibition at Sanborn House, a symbol of historical significance, will provide a compelling backdrop, emphasizing the intersection of Airitam's contemporary vision with the rich heritage of the venue.
The Griffin Museum is honored to collaborate with the Winchester Historical Society in hosting this extraordinary exhibition. The Sanborn House, with its storied past and architectural splendor, will offer visitors a unique and memorable experience. Engaging with Airitam's powerful imagery amid the historical context of the venue will prompt viewers to reflect on the unjust histories surrounding wealth, labor, and race in our country, as the Sanborn House owes its existence to the coffee industry.
We invite the community to explore Airitam's compelling world within the illustrative space of the Sanborn House, on view until September 1st. Additionally, we encourage all interested individuals to join the online artist's talk on August 29th, where Airitam will discuss the breadth and significance of her project.
