ADK 46er weekend (Dix Mountain)

Dix mountain is one of the 46 high peaks in the Adirondack’s with an elevation of 4,840 ft. Named after Governor John Dix and part of the Dix Wilderness, the summit offers 360 views of the high peaks, Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains after a strenuous but exhilarating climb up the slide. The summit is remote, with a total hiking distance over 13 miles but doesn’t offer as many crowds as nearby peaks, allowing you to enjoy the summit. We’ll be taking the Dix Trail out-and-back around Round Pound and towards the slide and backtrack the same route.

The plan is to camp at Sharp Bridge Campground Friday-Sunday. We'll be hiking Dix Mountain on Saturday and Sunday is open depending on how we're feeling.

Difficulty: Strenuous. Expect stream crossings in the lower elevations, exposed roots and rocky sections, steep grades. There is a slide near the summit that is very steep and will be difficult especially on the descent.

Total distance of hike: 13.5 miles

Elevation gain: 3,600 ft.

What to bring:

Waterproof hiking boots

Non-cotton layers

Headlamp

3+ liters of water (less if you have a water filter)

Snacks and lunch. You will be burning a lot of energy!

Positive attitude

Flakers need not sign up. Only sign up if you're interested in joining. Flaking on this trip or cancelling within 2 weeks of the trip date will result in forfeiture of campsite fees and the out-of-state gate passes. Standard Ridj-it policies apply for cancellations regarding carpooling. Constantly flaking or cancelling may affect your ability to join future trips organized by me. Due to a limit on the amount of cars at the campsite and group sizes, there will not be any non-carpoolers for this trip. If you're not from the Boston area, feel free to contact me and we can meet at a Park & Ride along the way. I will not be able to add more spots for this trip.
