Dear friends,
After several months of hard work, we are launching A R E A, a new alternative to the contemporary art gallery. In a convertible loft, we are combining traditional gallery exhibitions with interactive and engaging experiences to stimulate conversation and to spark novel ideas.
Our inaugural exhibition, El Yuma, features the work of 14 Cuban artists who have been invited to present their views on the United States. Shortly after the American Western film ‘3:10 to Yuma’ (Delmer Daves, 1957) was screened in the theaters of the island, Cubans started to use the term Yumas for American visitors and El Yuma to refer to the United States.
This exhibition, curated by Havana-based curator Sachie Hernandez and yours truly, addresses the perceptions of a group of artists who approach the United States from their generational perspectives and personal interactions with the American reality, and a discourse that dissects multiple axes of the bilateral context.
It would be an honor if you can join us on Saturday, November 12th, from 7 to 11pm. Please, RSVP and feel free to forward this invitation to anyone who would enjoy being here with us.
Come find out what Cuban artists think of El Yuma!
Hugs!
Aynel David Guerra
