A R E A presents Please interrupt if you don't understand, Gabriel Sosa’s inaugural solo exhibition. Rooting his work in his experience as a court interpreter, Sosa confronts the use of language in the justice system, the overwhelming nature of the courtroom, and the fallibility of memory. Through drawing, video, and installation, Sosa investigates the malleability of truth and how words can lose their meaning.

In the layered text of Sosa's drawings, words struggle to be seen, heard, and understood. Sourced from legal documents, letters combine and emerge from one another, nearly obliterated only to be redrawn once again. Sosa reprises the theme of illegibility in a video piece in which the voices of multiple court interpreters incant the text of an immigration warning read to defendants who have plead guilty to a crime. A floor-to-ceiling installation of translucent sheets of paper features poignant messages exchanged between defendants and their loved ones.

Gabriel Sosa is an artist, linguist, and curator based in Boston. Born and raised in Miami, he is a graduate of New World School of the Arts, Boston University, and Tufts University, where he earned an MFA in 2016. Exhibitions of his work include The Yud Video Project at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, El Acercamiento at La Fábrica de Arte Cubano in Havana, Cuba, and the 4th SUR Biennial in Southern California. Most recently, Sosa curated Three Acts For(giving) in Boston and will be an artist-in-residence at the Santa Fe Art Institute in 2018.

Sosa is a recipient of the 2017 Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists. Administered by the Arts and Business Council of Greater Boston, the fellowship fosters artists’ career development through mentorship and the production of a solo exhibition. The fellowship is endowed by celebrated Abstract Expressionist Walter Feldman (1925-2017), with the goal of supporting emerging artists through opportunities for professional recognition and growth. This exhibition is made possible with the Walter Feldman Fellowship’s generous support.
