Ever wondered what formed Cape Cod into its unique shape? Or how the Boston Harbor Islands got there? What created Walden Pond? The answer to all of these questions is the same: glaciers! Up until about 10,000 years ago, much of the Northeast was covered with sheets of ice up to a kilometer thick and reaching as far south as Pennsylvania. These glaciers melted and reformed, carving out valleys, depositing sediment, and massively reshaping the landscape of New England. In this course we will look at the timeline of this period and the glaciers’ effects on the area. Students also will learn how to spot evidence of glaciers in everyday life. No prior geology knowledge is needed. Instructor: Sam Bovard
