Explore the multi-layered friendship between sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French. Colleagues, rivals, and champions of each other’s work, both artists created iconic pieces for the Boston area as well as across the country. This illustrated virtual talk by Dana Pilson will highlight some of their most well-known monuments as well as delve into their personal lives, relationships, and the artistic communities they created in Cornish, NH, and Stockbridge, MA.
Dana Pilson is the curatorial researcher and collections coordinator at Chesterwood, the historic home, studio, and gardens of American sculptor Daniel Chester French, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She was a member of the curatorial team for the exhibition, Monuments and Myths: The America of Sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French.
The Nichols House Museum on Boston's historic Beacon Hill was home to an early 20th-century family of artists and social activists. Preserved as a museum by Rose Standish Nichols, a pioneering woman landscape architect, the house is furnished with an original collection, including sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
